DESCRIPTION

This oval cut engagement ring sets a 0.81 carat oval diamond of F color, in the colorless range, in four prongs on a slim 14kt white gold band. A single row of thirty small round diamonds runs down each shoulder, so the ring sparkles along the band as well as at the center. Everything below describes this exact ring, which you can see and try on at our Boca Raton showroom.

Oval cut engagement ring: 0.81 ct F color oval diamond in four prongs on a 14kt white gold band with a single row of diamonds

The oval cut engagement ring at a glance

Here are the specifications of this oval cut engagement ring, as recorded for this piece.

The center stone is an oval brilliant cut diamond of 0.81 carats, graded F color and SI1 to SI2 clarity. It is set north to south in four prongs.

Thirty small round brilliant diamonds, 0.25 carats in total and also graded F color, are set in a single row along the upper half of the band. Together with the center, the ring carries 1.06 carats of diamonds.

The metal is 14kt white gold, stamped 14K inside the band. Our listing records the ring at size 7 and about 2.4 grams, and it can be resized to fit.

In short, it is a refined, modern oval diamond ring with an exceptionally white center stone and a delicate line of sparkle down the band.

Why an oval cut engagement ring

The oval is one of the most popular shapes for engagement rings, and for good reason. It combines the brilliance of a round with a longer, softer outline that is flattering on almost every hand.

An oval cut engagement ring also looks larger than a round diamond of the same weight. Because the stone is elongated, more of its surface faces up, so a 0.81 carat oval shows a generous face on the finger.

Set north to south, as this one is, the oval draws the eye along the finger and makes it look longer and slimmer.

And it feels a little more distinctive than a round, without being unconventional: a classic shape with a modern edge.

Oval, round or pear?

If you are choosing a shape, it helps to compare the three most popular elongated and classic options.

A round diamond has the most sparkle of any shape and the most traditional look. A pear is elongated like an oval but ends in a point, which gives it more drama and movement.

An oval sits between the two. It has nearly the brilliance of a round, the elongating effect of a pear, and a soft, symmetrical outline with no point to protect. That balance is why the oval cut engagement ring has become one of the most requested styles of the past decade.

For many people, the oval is simply the most flattering: elegant on long fingers, lengthening on shorter ones.

Length-to-width ratio

Ovals vary in shape, and the measure that describes it is the length-to-width ratio: the length of the stone divided by its width. Most ovals fall between about 1.30 and 1.50.

A lower ratio looks fuller and rounder; a higher ratio looks longer and slimmer. Neither is better. It is a matter of taste, and of how the stone looks on your hand.

This diamond has classic oval proportions, balanced between the two extremes. It reads clearly as an oval without looking narrow, which suits the slim band well.

If you are comparing, we can show you ovals of different proportions side by side so you can see which you prefer.

The F color diamond

The center diamond is graded F color, which places it in the colorless range, alongside D and E, at the very top of the grading scale. F color diamonds face up pure white, with no body color visible to the eye.

That matters especially in an oval. Elongated shapes can show color at their ends more readily than rounds, so a high color grade keeps the whole stone looking crisp and icy from end to end.

An F color diamond engagement ring is a mark of quality that is easy to appreciate: the diamond simply looks bright and white in any light. The thirty accent diamonds are also graded F, so the center and the band match perfectly.

Our guide to diamond color shows where F sits on the scale, and the Gemological Institute of America explains how color is graded.

Is an F color diamond worth it?

Color grades from D to F are all considered colorless, and the differences between them are extremely subtle, visible mainly to trained graders comparing stones side by side. Grades below that, from G to J, are near-colorless and cost noticeably less.

So why choose F? For an oval, color shows more easily at the ends of the stone, where light travels a longer path. In an F color diamond engagement ring, those ends stay as white as the center, which keeps the whole oval looking crisp.

F also offers most of the look of D and E at a lower price, which is why it is often considered the sweet spot of the colorless range.

If you want an oval cut engagement ring that looks icy white in every light, from daylight to candlelight, an F color center like this one is an excellent place to land. We are happy to show you how it compares with lower color grades when you visit.

Clarity: SI1 to SI2

The center diamond's clarity is recorded as SI1 to SI2, slightly included. Its inclusions are visible under 10x magnification, and at this size many SI stones look clean to the eye in normal wear.

Oval diamonds are brilliant cut, with many facets that break up light and help hide small inclusions. That is one reason SI clarity is such a popular and sensible choice in an oval: you invest in the grades you can see, like color, and save on the ones you usually cannot.

When you visit, we will show you the diamond under a loupe so you can judge its clarity for yourself.

For how color, clarity, cut and carat fit together, see our guide to the diamond 4Cs.

A diamond band engagement ring

The band carries a single row of small round diamonds along its upper half, running from the head down each shoulder. This makes the ring a diamond band engagement ring rather than a plain solitaire.

Each small diamond is held in tiny prongs that form a gently scalloped edge, so very little metal shows and the diamonds catch light from the sides as well as the top.

The row adds sparkle without adding bulk. The band stays slim and delicate, and the diamonds frame the oval rather than competing with it.

Stopping the row halfway down the band also keeps the ring comfortable and makes it easier to resize, since the underside of the band is plain gold.

The four-prong head

The oval is held in four claw prongs, spaced evenly around the stone. Four prongs show as much of the diamond as possible and keep the oval outline clean.

The head sits just above the band, with a few small diamonds on its sides, so the ring sparkles in profile as well. From above, the four prongs frame the oval neatly.

This is the classic setting for an oval diamond ring: simple, secure and focused on the center stone. Paired with the single row of diamonds on the shoulders, it turns a simple oval diamond ring into a polished oval cut engagement ring that looks finished from every angle, whether seen from above, from the side or across a room.

Why a white gold oval engagement ring

White gold is the natural partner for an F color diamond engagement ring. The white metal and white prongs frame the F color oval with brightness rather than warmth, so it looks as white as possible.

This white gold oval engagement ring is made in 14kt gold, which is 58.3 percent pure gold, alloyed for strength. That strength matters in a slim band that carries a row of small diamonds.

White gold is usually finished with rhodium for a bright white surface. Over time the rhodium can wear, and a quick re-plating restores it; we can do that in our store.

Why the accent diamonds match

A detail that is easy to miss: the thirty small diamonds on the band are graded F color, the same as the center stone. That is unusual. Many rings use lower-color accents, which can look slightly warmer than the center when viewed closely.

Here, the center and the band are the same bright white, so the whole ring looks cohesive. It is a quiet sign of quality that makes a real difference to how the ring reads on the hand.

Wearing an oval cut engagement ring every day

This is a very wearable ring. The head sits low, the band is slim and the diamonds along the shoulders are small and securely prong-set.

As with any diamond band engagement ring, take it off for the gym, gardening and heavy cleaning, and put it on after lotion and hairspray. A regular clean keeps the sparkle bright.

Proposing with an oval diamond ring

An oval diamond ring is one of the safest and most loved choices for a proposal. It suits almost every style and every hand, and the F color center looks brilliantly white in photographs, which matters on the day.

The ring is listed at size 7. If you are unsure of your partner's size, borrow a ring they wear on the same finger, or ask a close friend. It is fine to propose with the ring as it is and have it resized afterwards.

How to judge an oval diamond ring in person

Start with the shape. Ovals vary from nearly round to long and narrow. This one has classic proportions, but the best way to know what you like is to see a few side by side.

Next, look for the bow-tie: a darker band that can appear across the middle of any oval. Almost every oval shows some; what matters is how strong it is. Tilt the ring in different light to judge it.

Then look at color from end to end. In an F color oval like this one, the ends should look as white as the center.

Finally, put it on. A ring always looks different on the hand, and an oval diamond ring in particular changes character with finger shape.

Pairing a wedding band

A slim straight band sits comfortably beside this white gold oval engagement ring. A plain white gold band keeps the look clean, and a matching single-row diamond band continues the line of sparkle for a coordinated set.

Because the head sits low and the band is slim, most straight bands sit close to the ring. Bring in a band you are considering, or try some of ours, and we will show you how they look together.

Caring for your oval cut engagement ring

Clean the ring in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap, brush gently under the head and along the diamond row with a soft toothbrush, rinse and pat dry. Our jewelry care guide has more detail.

Take the ring off for the gym, gardening and cleaning, and have the prongs checked every six months or so, especially on the small diamonds along the band. We offer complimentary cleaning and inspection for jewelry bought from our store.

Sizing, appraisal and insurance

The ring is listed at size 7. Because the diamond row stops halfway down the band, it can usually be resized without disturbing the accent diamonds; we confirm before any work is done.

It includes a written jewelry appraisal by David Stern, which describes the diamonds and the gold and gives a replacement value for insurance.

Questions about this oval cut engagement ring

What are the specifications of the center diamond?

The center is a 0.81 carat oval brilliant cut diamond, graded F color and SI1 to SI2 clarity, set north to south in four prongs.

How many diamonds are on the band?

Thirty small round diamonds, 0.25 carats in total and graded F color, set in a single row along the upper half of the band. With the center, the ring carries 1.06 carats of diamonds.

What does F color mean?

F is in the colorless range, the third-highest grade on the scale. An F color diamond faces up pure white, with no body color visible to the eye.

Does an oval diamond look bigger than a round?

Yes. An oval is elongated, so more of its surface faces up, and a 0.81 carat oval shows a larger face than a round of the same weight.

What is a bow-tie in an oval diamond?

It is a darker band that can appear across the middle of an oval, caused by the way light passes through the elongated shape. Nearly every oval shows some; we recommend judging it in person.

Is the band set with diamonds all the way around?

No. The diamonds run along the upper half of the band, from the head down each shoulder. The underside is plain gold, which keeps it comfortable and easier to size.

What size is the ring, and can it be resized?

It is listed at size 7. Because the diamond row stops halfway down the band, it can usually be resized without disturbing the accent diamonds.

What wedding band goes with it?

A slim plain white gold band keeps it clean, and a matching single-row diamond band makes a coordinated set.

Does the ring come with an appraisal?

Yes. It includes a written jewelry appraisal by David Stern, a GIA Graduate Gemologist, with a replacement value for insurance.

Can I see the ring before I buy it?

Yes. It is at our Boca Raton showroom. We are open Monday to Friday, 9:30 to 5:30, and Saturday, 10:30 to 4:30.

Why choose an oval over a round diamond?

An oval has nearly the sparkle of a round, looks larger for its weight, and lengthens the finger. It also feels a little more distinctive while still being classic.

Are the accent diamonds the same color as the center?

Yes. The thirty accent diamonds are graded F color, the same as the center, so the whole ring looks a cohesive bright white.

What is a length-to-width ratio?

It describes an oval's shape: its length divided by its width. Most ovals fall between about 1.30 and 1.50; lower looks fuller, higher looks slimmer.

I recently visited David Stern Jewelers to have some diamond jewelry appraised. The pieces were left to the estate of my recently deceased mother. My partner and I immediately felt confidence in Mr. Stern's experience and expertise. He is very credentialed, and his many years in business, dealing with clients at all income levels, left us feeling assured that we had come to the right place. Mr. Stern is straightforward and very knowledgeable. His wife, who works with him, is very friendly and sociable, and made us feel quite comfortable.

After moving from the northeast to Florida, I'm so happy to have found such a fantastic and knowledgable jeweler here in Boca. We were referred to David Stern by our jewelry insurance company for a repair, and ever since then he has become our guy! Whether it's repairs or purchasing new pieces, David Stern is THE best!

I had been trying to sell my old engagement ring but didn't want it to go to just anybody. I looked up Jewelers near me and David's name came up. Good reviews are important, but what sold me was actually the phone call. I called this place and David answered and welcomed me in without making it sound like he was trying to "sell me". He didn't ask for anything of me and offered to look my ring. I had lost the information on the cut and color, etc. I knew the minute I walked in I would feel safe selling my ring here. Great customer service, great guy, genuine. David is real- not some guy trying to take your money! I was relaxed and finally able to close this chapter in my life! Thanks David!!

I had purchased an antique engagement ring (over 100 years old!) from a separate dealer and brought it in to David to be appraised and reinforced. Given the ring was old, the structural integrity was something that concerned me. I had a very enjoyable experience with David as he educated my Fiancé and I on every aspect of the ring. David was very honest and transparent with us - which we appreciated! We had David reconstruct the ring in order to create a more resilient replica. We couldn't be happier with the results as we now have a beautiful ring that will last for another 100 years!
I'm new to the area and needed to have my future fiance's engagement ring appraised and after looking at Yelp I choose to see David Stern. I'm glad I did! His knowledge about my jewelry was amazing. He took his time and was very thorough and gave me a spot-on appraisal. I decided to have my own ring and watch appraised after seeing the process and he even cleaned my own ring which made it shine. The fee for the appraisals was fair and I will definitely be going back to David to pick out my fiance's wedding band.

I wanted to find a place to get a wedding band to match my engagement ring. I looked online at reviews and David Stern's was by far the top rated and I will tell you it is for a reason. They did a great job with my ring and it matches perfectly. Him and his staff will make sure to give you exactly what you are looking for. They also completed the work very quickly, which I was pleasantly surprised. I highly recommend them!

I had a wonderful experience getting some jewelry appraised. David was honest and upfront about the pieces. Gave me some good advice about buying pieces while on a cruise (will not make that mistake again!). I will be back in the future to actually purchase pieces from him as he has beautiful pieces in his store that many of them are made and designed by him directly. Very satisfied!
