DESCRIPTION

This pear emerald ring sets a 2 carat pear-shaped emerald of rich green inside a halo of fifteen round brilliant diamonds, 0.80 carats in total, in 18kt yellow gold. The emerald points toward the fingertip, and each diamond sits in its own prongs around it, so the head of the ring reads as a bright, classic cluster. Everything below describes this exact piece, which you can see at our Boca Raton showroom.

The pear emerald ring at a glance

Here are the specifications of this pear emerald ring, as recorded for this piece.

The center stone is a faceted pear-shaped emerald of 2 carats, a saturated medium green. It is held in claws, with the point of the pear facing the tip of the finger.

Around it is a halo of fifteen round brilliant cut diamonds, about 0.05 carats each and 0.80 carats in total, graded J color and SI2 clarity. Together with the emerald, the ring carries 2.80 carats of gemstones.

The metal is 18kt yellow gold. Our listing records the ring at size 7 and 6 grams, and it can be resized to fit.

In short, it is a classic emerald halo ring with a generous center, a warm gold setting and a price that makes a 2 carat emerald genuinely attainable.

Why a pear-shaped emerald

The pear shape, also called a teardrop, combines a rounded end with a single point. On the hand it is one of the most flattering shapes there is: the point draws the eye along the finger and makes it look longer and slimmer.

Most emeralds are cut in the rectangular step cut that carries their name. A pear-shaped emerald is less common, and it gives this ring a softer, more romantic outline than a traditional emerald cut.

The pear also shows color well. Its curved sides and pointed tip return light in several directions, so the green stays lively as the hand moves rather than looking flat.

That is the appeal of a teardrop emerald ring: the rarity of the shape, the flattering line on the finger, and a center that looks larger than its weight suggests because of its elongated outline.

The emerald's color and character

The emerald is a rich, saturated green with a slight bluish tone, the color that has made emerald one of the most prized gems in history. The Gemological Institute of America describes the most valued emeralds as bluish green to pure green, with strong saturation and a tone that is not too dark, which is the range this stone sits in.

Like almost every natural emerald, this one has visible inclusions. Jewelers call them the jardin, French for garden, because they can look like moss or foliage inside the stone. They are a normal part of emerald, and a stone with none at all would be extremely rare and far more expensive.

Most emeralds are also treated with oil or resin to make the natural fissures less visible, a practice that goes back centuries. The written appraisal for this ring records what is known about the stone, and we are happy to talk through what that means for care.

Emerald is a variety of the mineral beryl and rates 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs hardness scale. That is hard enough for a ring worn with some care, but emeralds are more brittle than sapphires or diamonds, which is why the halo setting here matters.

A classic emerald halo ring

The setting is a classic halo, sometimes called a cluster. Fifteen round diamonds surround the pear emerald, one at the tip and seven down each side, following its outline all the way around.

Each diamond is held in its own slender prongs, rather than being bead-set in a continuous frame. That gives the halo an open, airy look and lets light reach each diamond from the side, so the border sparkles brightly against the green.

A halo does two useful things for an emerald. It makes the center look larger, because the diamonds extend the outline of the pear well beyond the stone itself. And it helps protect the emerald, because the diamonds sit slightly proud of its edges and take the knocks that would otherwise land on the gem.

That combination of size, sparkle and protection is why the emerald halo ring has been a favorite design for decades, and why this one would sit as comfortably at a formal dinner as it would on an ordinary weekday.

The diamonds: 0.80 carats, J color, SI2

The fifteen halo diamonds total 0.80 carats. They are graded J color, which is near-colorless with a faint warmth, and SI2 clarity, which means slightly included.

In a yellow gold emerald ring, J color is a sensible choice. Next to warm gold, the faint warmth of a J diamond disappears, and the diamonds face up bright. Paying for a colorless grade would add cost without adding anything you could see in this setting. Our guide to diamond color shows where J sits on the scale.

SI2 diamonds may show small inclusions under magnification, but in small halo stones like these, set around a strongly colored center, they are not noticeable when the ring is worn. The job of these diamonds is to frame the emerald with light, and they do it well.

For more on how diamonds are graded, see our guide to the diamond 4Cs.

Why a yellow gold emerald ring

Green and yellow gold is one of the oldest pairings in jewelry. Warm gold deepens the green of an emerald and makes it look richer, while white metal can make the same stone look cooler and more blue.

This yellow gold emerald ring is made in 18kt gold, which is 75 percent pure gold. It has a deeper, more buttery color than 14kt, and it will never need replating the way white gold does.

The head sits on a raised gallery of fine gold wires, open underneath so light can reach the emerald and the diamonds from below. The band is plain and slightly tapered, narrowing toward the back of the finger for comfort.

At 6 grams, the ring has a solid feel without being heavy, and the plain band makes it easy to wear alone or alongside another ring.

A May birthstone ring

Emerald is the birthstone for May, and a pear emerald ring like this one makes a meaningful May birthstone ring for a birthday or a milestone.

Emerald is also the traditional gift for a 20th and a 55th wedding anniversary, and it has long been associated with renewal and new beginnings, which is part of why so many people choose it for a gift that marks a new chapter.

Because the stone here is a full 2 carats, this is a May birthstone ring with real presence, not a small token. It is the kind of piece that becomes the ring someone is known for.

If you are buying as a gift, ask us about sizing before you choose. The ring is listed at size 7, and we can resize it after purchase.

Pear, oval or emerald cut: choosing a shape

If you are deciding between emerald shapes, it helps to see how each one wears. The traditional emerald cut is a long rectangle with stepped facets; it looks calm and architectural, and it shows the inside of the stone clearly, inclusions and all.

An oval is softer and more symmetrical, and it suits a quiet, classic look. A pear sits between the two: it has the softness of an oval at one end and a crisp point at the other, which gives a teardrop emerald ring more movement and a more distinctive outline on the hand.

Because a pear has a point, it is also the most directional of the three. Worn point toward the fingertip, as this one is designed, it lengthens the finger. That is why a pear emerald ring often suits shorter fingers especially well.

When you visit, we can put this ring beside other shapes so you can compare them directly on your own hand.

A pear emerald ring as an engagement ring

Some couples choose an emerald instead of a diamond for an engagement ring, for its color and its long association with loyalty and renewal. A pear emerald ring with a diamond halo is one of the most traditional ways to do it, and the look has a long history in engagement jewelry.

If you plan to wear it every day, choose with care in mind. Emerald is softer and more brittle than diamond, so it needs a little more attention. The halo on this ring is a real help here: the diamonds stand slightly proud of the emerald and take many of the knocks.

A plain yellow gold band sits comfortably beside this emerald halo ring, and a thin diamond band also works well. Bring a band in, or try one of ours, to see how the pair looks together.

How to judge a teardrop emerald ring in person

Start with the color. Look at any pear emerald ring in daylight and then under indoor light. A good emerald stays green in both, rather than turning gray or overly dark indoors.

Next, look at the shape. The pear should be balanced, with evenly rounded shoulders and a point centered at the tip. A lopsided pear is easy to spot once you know to look for it, and this one is well proportioned.

Then look through the stone at its inclusions. Some are expected in any emerald. What matters is that they do not dull the color or sit in a way that weakens the stone, especially near the point.

Finally, turn the ring and look at the halo. The diamonds should be evenly matched in size and brightness, and every prong should be sitting firmly over its stone. When you visit, we will look at all of this with you under a loupe.

Caring for a pear emerald ring

A yellow gold emerald ring needs a little more care than a diamond or sapphire ring. Never put an emerald ring in an ultrasonic cleaner or steam cleaner, and avoid harsh chemicals, which can affect the oil that is usually present in the stone.

To clean it, rinse the ring in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap and brush gently around the halo with a soft toothbrush, then pat dry. Our jewelry care guide has more detail.

Take the ring off for the gym, gardening, cleaning and anything that might knock it. The halo protects the emerald, but a hard blow can still chip the point of a pear.

Store it separately in a soft pouch so the diamonds cannot scratch it or other jewelry, and have the prongs checked from time to time. We offer complimentary cleaning and inspection for jewelry bought from our store.

Sizing, appraisal and insurance

The ring is listed at size 7. 18kt gold can be resized by a skilled jeweler, and because the diamonds are all in the head rather than down the band, this ring can usually be sized without disturbing them. We confirm before any work is done.

This ring includes a written jewelry appraisal by David Stern, which describes the emerald, the diamonds and the gold and gives a replacement value for insurance. We recommend scheduling it on your insurance separately.

Questions about this pear emerald ring

How large is the emerald in this pear emerald ring?

The center is a 2 carat pear-shaped emerald. With fifteen round diamonds totaling 0.80 carats around it, the ring carries 2.80 carats of gemstones in all.

Is the emerald natural?

Our record lists it as a natural emerald, not lab-created, and the written appraisal documents it. Like almost all natural emeralds it has visible inclusions, called the jardin, which are normal for the gem.

Is the emerald treated?

Most emeralds are treated with oil or resin to make natural fissures less visible, a centuries-old practice. The written appraisal records what is known about this stone, and we are happy to discuss it with you.

What is an emerald halo ring?

It is a ring in which a border of small diamonds surrounds the emerald. Here fifteen round diamonds, each in its own prongs, follow the pear outline, making the center look larger and helping to protect it.

What quality are the diamonds?

The fifteen halo diamonds total 0.80 carats and are graded J color and SI2 clarity. Against yellow gold and a vivid green emerald, they face up bright and their inclusions are not noticeable when worn.

Is emerald durable enough for everyday wear?

Emerald rates 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, so it can be worn often with some care. It is more brittle than diamond or sapphire, so remove the ring for sports, gardening and cleaning. The halo helps protect the stone.

Can I clean it in an ultrasonic cleaner?

No. Never put an emerald in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. Use lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, then pat dry.

What size is the ring, and can it be resized?

It is listed at size 7. 18kt gold can be resized, and because the diamonds are in the head rather than the band, the ring can usually be sized without disturbing them.

Is this a good May birthstone ring?

Yes. Emerald is the birthstone for May, and with a 2 carat center this is a May birthstone ring with real presence. Emerald is also the traditional gift for 20th and 55th anniversaries.

Does the ring come with an appraisal?

Yes. It includes a written jewelry appraisal by David Stern, a GIA Graduate Gemologist, with a replacement value for insurance.

Can I see the ring before I buy it?

Yes. The ring is at our Boca Raton showroom. We are open Monday to Friday, 9:30 to 5:30, and Saturday, 10:30 to 4:30.

Can a pear emerald ring be used as an engagement ring?

Yes. An emerald with a diamond halo is a traditional engagement ring style. Emerald needs a little more care than diamond, and the halo on this ring helps protect the stone during everyday wear.

Which way should the point of the pear face?

This ring is designed with the point toward the fingertip, which lengthens the look of the finger. That is the most common way to wear a pear-shaped stone.

I did not know what to expect going in for some appraisals. What I found is a real professional. He does everything right in front of you so no worries. He could not have been better. I would not even consider going any where else. Top Notch and very fair.

After moving from the northeast to Florida, I'm so happy to have found such a fantastic and knowledgable jeweler here in Boca. We were referred to David Stern by our jewelry insurance company for a repair, and ever since then he has become our guy! Whether it's repairs or purchasing new pieces, David Stern is THE best!

I had a wonderful experience getting some jewelry appraised. David was honest and upfront about the pieces. Gave me some good advice about buying pieces while on a cruise (will not make that mistake again!). I will be back in the future to actually purchase pieces from him as he has beautiful pieces in his store that many of them are made and designed by him directly. Very satisfied!

I wanted to find a place to get a wedding band to match my engagement ring. I looked online at reviews and David Stern's was by far the top rated and I will tell you it is for a reason. They did a great job with my ring and it matches perfectly. Him and his staff will make sure to give you exactly what you are looking for. They also completed the work very quickly, which I was pleasantly surprised. I highly recommend them!

I had been trying to sell my old engagement ring but didn't want it to go to just anybody. I looked up Jewelers near me and David's name came up. Good reviews are important, but what sold me was actually the phone call. I called this place and David answered and welcomed me in without making it sound like he was trying to "sell me". He didn't ask for anything of me and offered to look my ring. I had lost the information on the cut and color, etc. I knew the minute I walked in I would feel safe selling my ring here. Great customer service, great guy, genuine. David is real- not some guy trying to take your money! I was relaxed and finally able to close this chapter in my life! Thanks David!!
I'm new to the area and needed to have my future fiance's engagement ring appraised and after looking at Yelp I choose to see David Stern. I'm glad I did! His knowledge about my jewelry was amazing. He took his time and was very thorough and gave me a spot-on appraisal. I decided to have my own ring and watch appraised after seeing the process and he even cleaned my own ring which made it shine. The fee for the appraisals was fair and I will definitely be going back to David to pick out my fiance's wedding band.

I recently visited David Stern Jewelers to have some diamond jewelry appraised. The pieces were left to the estate of my recently deceased mother. My partner and I immediately felt confidence in Mr. Stern's experience and expertise. He is very credentialed, and his many years in business, dealing with clients at all income levels, left us feeling assured that we had come to the right place. Mr. Stern is straightforward and very knowledgeable. His wife, who works with him, is very friendly and sociable, and made us feel quite comfortable.

David is an artistic genius when it comes to one of a kind pieces and a fair and honest businessman. I have been a customer of David's for 4 years and each time I have shopped he has treated us with courtesy and professionalism.

I had purchased an antique engagement ring (over 100 years old!) from a separate dealer and brought it in to David to be appraised and reinforced. Given the ring was old, the structural integrity was something that concerned me. I had a very enjoyable experience with David as he educated my Fiancé and I on every aspect of the ring. David was very honest and transparent with us - which we appreciated! We had David reconstruct the ring in order to create a more resilient replica. We couldn't be happier with the results as we now have a beautiful ring that will last for another 100 years!
