Tanzanite bracelet: oval tanzanites and small diamonds on wavy 14kt white gold links

The tanzanite bracelet at a glance

Here is what this tanzanite bracelet is made of, as recorded for this piece.

It holds a series of oval faceted tanzanites, each in four white gold prongs. Together the tanzanites weigh 0.60 carats.

Between the tanzanites run curved, S-shaped links of white gold. At the center of each link sits a small round diamond; there are ten diamonds in all, 0.05 carats in total, graded I color. Together with the tanzanites, the bracelet carries 0.65 carats of gemstones.

The metal is 14kt white gold. The design is light and open, so it sits comfortably on the wrist and moves with the hand.

In short, it is an oval tanzanite bracelet that brings a line of violet-blue color and small flashes of white to everyday wear.

What tanzanite is

Tanzanite is one of the youngest gems in fine jewelry. It was discovered in 1967 and is found in only one place in the world: a small area near Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania, which gave the gem its name.

It is a variety of the mineral zoisite, prized for its rich violet-blue color. The Gemological Institute of America explains that tanzanite is strongly pleochroic, meaning it shows slightly different colors from different angles: blue from one direction, violet from another.

That shifting color is part of its charm. As the wrist moves, each stone in this tanzanite bracelet flashes between blue and violet, so the bracelet never looks quite the same twice.

Almost all tanzanite is gently heated after mining to remove brownish tones and reveal the violet-blue it is known for. The treatment is permanent, stable and standard across the trade.

A short history of tanzanite

Tanzanite's story is remarkably recent. The gem was found in the Merelani Hills of northern Tanzania in 1967, and within a couple of years it had been named after its country of origin and introduced to the wider world.

It quickly became one of the most popular colored gems of the late twentieth century, prized for a violet-blue that no other gem quite matches. Because it comes from a single small area, its supply has always been limited, and that single source is part of what makes a tanzanite bracelet feel special.

For many people, the appeal is simply the color: rich, velvety and slightly different in every light.

Tanzanite or sapphire?

Tanzanite and blue sapphire are sometimes confused, because both can be blue. They are quite different gems.

Sapphire is corundum, 9 on the Mohs scale, and usually a pure blue. Tanzanite is zoisite, softer at about 6 to 7, and shows a distinctive violet-blue that shifts between blue and purple as you move it.

In a tanzanite and diamond bracelet like this one, that violet undertone is exactly the attraction: it gives the stones a warmth and depth that sets them apart from sapphire. If you would like to compare, we can show you both side by side in the showroom.

The oval tanzanites

The tanzanites in this bracelet are oval faceted stones, each set in four slim prongs. The oval shape is a natural fit for a bracelet: it lies neatly along the wrist and shows off the color across a long face.

Their color is a bright, medium violet-blue, lively rather than inky. In daylight the blue comes forward; under warm indoor light the violet deepens.

Because the stones are spaced along the bracelet rather than set edge to edge, each one reads individually, like a row of small blue lights. That spacing is what gives an oval tanzanite bracelet like this its airy, delicate look.

Together the tanzanites total 0.60 carats, which is exactly the right scale for everyday wear: enough color to notice, never so much that the bracelet feels heavy.

Tanzanite and diamond bracelet detail: prong-set oval tanzanites joined by wavy white gold links with a small diamond at the center

The wave links and diamonds

Between the tanzanites run slender white gold links shaped in a gentle S-curve. The curves give the bracelet a sense of movement, as if the line of stones were flowing around the wrist.

At the center of each link sits a small round diamond, set in a tiny collar of white gold. The ten diamonds total 0.05 carats and are graded I color, near-colorless, so they read as bright white points between the blue.

That alternation of color and white is what makes this a tanzanite and diamond bracelet rather than a plain gemstone bracelet. The diamonds are small on purpose: they add sparkle and rhythm without competing with the tanzanites.

The open links also keep the bracelet flexible, so it drapes comfortably and moves naturally.

That flexibility matters more than it might seem. A stiff bracelet can pinch or sit awkwardly on the wrist bone, while a supple one follows the shape of the arm. Here each link pivots independently, so the bracelet settles into a smooth curve however you hold your hand, and the stones always face outward where they can be seen.

A lightweight gemstone bracelet

This bracelet is designed to be light. The slender links and spaced stones mean there is very little metal, so it feels barely there on the wrist.

That makes it an ideal lightweight gemstone bracelet for everyday wear. It is comfortable at a desk, easy to wear with a watch, and delicate enough to stack with other bracelets.

It also means the bracelet is easy to layer. Pair it with a thin gold bangle, a tennis bracelet or a watch, and the tanzanites add a note of color to the stack.

A light bracelet is also less likely to catch or tug, which makes it practical for the busy days when you want to wear something beautiful without thinking about it.

A December birthstone bracelet

Tanzanite is one of the birthstones for December, alongside turquoise and zircon. That makes this a meaningful December birthstone bracelet for anyone born in the last month of the year.

It is also a popular gift for a 24th wedding anniversary, and its violet-blue color makes it a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves blue or purple.

Because a bracelet needs no ring sizing, it is one of the easiest pieces of fine jewelry to give as a surprise.

Getting the fit right

A bracelet should sit comfortably on the wrist with a little room to move, but not so loose that it slides over the hand. A good rule of thumb is to allow about a finger's width between the bracelet and the wrist.

Because this is a lightweight gemstone bracelet with open links, it drapes naturally and sits close to the skin. If you would like the length adjusted, ask us when you visit; we can advise on the best fit for your wrist.

Stacking a tanzanite bracelet

This bracelet is made for stacking. Its light, open design sits comfortably beside a watch, a slim bangle or a diamond tennis bracelet without adding bulk.

For a coordinated stack, keep the metals white: white gold or platinum pieces make the violet-blue of the tanzanites stand out. For a bolder look, pair it with a yellow gold bangle; the contrast between warm gold and cool blue is striking.

Worn alone, an oval tanzanite bracelet is delicate and refined. Worn in a stack, it adds the one note of color that ties everything together.

Everyday wear

Many people save colored gemstone jewelry for special occasions. This bracelet is designed for the opposite: to be worn every day and enjoyed often.

The spaced stones, slender links and light weight make it comfortable from morning to evening, and the white gold keeps it versatile enough for work, weekends and dinners out. A tanzanite bracelet worn daily becomes part of your personal style, the piece people come to associate with you.

With sensible care, removing it for sports and heavy work and cleaning it gently, it will keep its color and sparkle for many years.

Pairing with earrings and necklaces

If you love tanzanite, this bracelet pairs beautifully with other tanzanite pieces. A pair of tanzanite studs or a tanzanite pendant creates a coordinated set, and the matching violet-blue ties the whole look together.

Diamond studs and a simple white gold chain are just as effective. They let the tanzanite and diamond bracelet provide the color while the rest of your jewelry adds quiet sparkle.

For a softer look, pair it with pearls. The creamy white of pearls sets off the violet-blue of tanzanite particularly well, especially in evening light.

How to judge a tanzanite bracelet in person

Start with color. Look at the bracelet in daylight and under indoor light, and watch the stones shift between blue and violet. The tanzanites should be similar in tone to one another, so the line of color looks even.

Next, check the settings. Each tanzanite should sit level in its four prongs, and each small diamond should be secure in its collar.

Then drape the bracelet over your wrist and close the clasp. It should lie smoothly, move freely and be easy for you to fasten on your own.

A gift for someone who loves color

A tanzanite bracelet makes a thoughtful gift for birthdays, anniversaries and milestones. As a December birthstone bracelet, it is especially meaningful for anyone born in December, and its violet-blue suits anyone who loves blue or purple.

Because it needs no sizing and is light enough to wear every day, it is also one of the easiest pieces of fine jewelry to give with confidence.

Why 14kt white gold

White gold is a natural partner for tanzanite. The cool white metal keeps the violet-blue crisp and bright, and it makes the small diamonds look as white as possible.

14kt white gold is 58.3 percent pure gold, alloyed with white metals for strength and usually finished with rhodium for a bright white surface. That strength matters in a bracelet, which moves and flexes more than a ring or necklace.

Over time the rhodium finish can wear, and a quick re-plating restores it; we can do that in our store.

How to wear a tanzanite bracelet

A tanzanite bracelet works as well with everyday clothes as it does with evening wear. The violet-blue pairs beautifully with navy, gray, white and black, and it adds a touch of color to a neutral outfit.

Wear it alone for a delicate look, or stack it with other white gold or silver-toned pieces. It sits nicely beside a watch, and it pairs well with tanzanite or diamond earrings for a coordinated set.

Because tanzanite is softer than sapphire or diamond, take the bracelet off for sports, gardening and heavy work, and put it on after lotion and perfume.

Caring for your tanzanite and diamond bracelet

Tanzanite rates about 6 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, so it deserves a little more care than harder gems. Never put the bracelet in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner, and avoid sudden temperature changes.

To clean it, rinse the bracelet in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap, brush gently around each stone with a soft toothbrush, rinse and pat dry. Our jewelry care guide has more detail.

Store it on its own in a soft pouch, so harder gems and metal cannot scratch the tanzanites, and have the prongs and clasp checked from time to time. We offer complimentary cleaning and inspection for jewelry bought from our store.

I went to David to have an engagement ring appraised because of his excellent reviews. I was very impressed with David’s knowledge and honesty and was glad to see that the great reviews were well earned.
I'm new to the area and needed to have my future fiance's engagement ring appraised and after looking at Yelp I choose to see David Stern. I'm glad I did! His knowledge about my jewelry was amazing. He took his time and was very thorough and gave me a spot-on appraisal. I decided to have my own ring and watch appraised after seeing the process and he even cleaned my own ring which made it shine. The fee for the appraisals was fair and I will definitely be going back to David to pick out my fiance's wedding band.

I wanted to find a place to get a wedding band to match my engagement ring. I looked online at reviews and David Stern's was by far the top rated and I will tell you it is for a reason. They did a great job with my ring and it matches perfectly. Him and his staff will make sure to give you exactly what you are looking for. They also completed the work very quickly, which I was pleasantly surprised. I highly recommend them!

I had purchased an antique engagement ring (over 100 years old!) from a separate dealer and brought it in to David to be appraised and reinforced. Given the ring was old, the structural integrity was something that concerned me. I had a very enjoyable experience with David as he educated my Fiancé and I on every aspect of the ring. David was very honest and transparent with us - which we appreciated! We had David reconstruct the ring in order to create a more resilient replica. We couldn't be happier with the results as we now have a beautiful ring that will last for another 100 years!

After moving from the northeast to Florida, I'm so happy to have found such a fantastic and knowledgable jeweler here in Boca. We were referred to David Stern by our jewelry insurance company for a repair, and ever since then he has become our guy! Whether it's repairs or purchasing new pieces, David Stern is THE best!

I recently visited David Stern Jewelers to have some diamond jewelry appraised. The pieces were left to the estate of my recently deceased mother. My partner and I immediately felt confidence in Mr. Stern's experience and expertise. He is very credentialed, and his many years in business, dealing with clients at all income levels, left us feeling assured that we had come to the right place. Mr. Stern is straightforward and very knowledgeable. His wife, who works with him, is very friendly and sociable, and made us feel quite comfortable.

I did not know what to expect going in for some appraisals. What I found is a real professional. He does everything right in front of you so no worries. He could not have been better. I would not even consider going any where else. Top Notch and very fair.

I had a wonderful experience getting some jewelry appraised. David was honest and upfront about the pieces. Gave me some good advice about buying pieces while on a cruise (will not make that mistake again!). I will be back in the future to actually purchase pieces from him as he has beautiful pieces in his store that many of them are made and designed by him directly. Very satisfied!

I had been trying to sell my old engagement ring but didn't want it to go to just anybody. I looked up Jewelers near me and David's name came up. Good reviews are important, but what sold me was actually the phone call. I called this place and David answered and welcomed me in without making it sound like he was trying to "sell me". He didn't ask for anything of me and offered to look my ring. I had lost the information on the cut and color, etc. I knew the minute I walked in I would feel safe selling my ring here. Great customer service, great guy, genuine. David is real- not some guy trying to take your money! I was relaxed and finally able to close this chapter in my life! Thanks David!!
